Individual Taxpayer Identification Number Internal Revenue Service

The identity documents must verify both your identity and your foreign status. Nonresident aliens claiming tax treaty benefits must submit original documents or copies certified by the issuing agency. Dependents of U.S. military personnel are required to submit original documents or certified copies unless the required documents to prove foreign status and identity are notarized by an agent of the Department of Defense. A copy of a U.S. military ID is required if the documents are notarized. An exclusive list of documents that are acceptable for this purpose is included in the Instructions for Form W-7.

It also makes it possible for an illegal immigrant to apply for a mortgage loan. If you’re a US citizen who regularly files taxes, you likely have a Social Security number. But if you’re a non-citizen, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) still expects you to report taxes every year — for which you’ll need an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). The IRS clarifies that you need either an ITIN or an SSN to get the Child Tax Credit. Of course, you’ll only receive that credit if meet the other reporting requirements for it.

  • Remember that “ITIN” stands for Individual Tax Identification Number.
  • The identity documents must verify both your identity and your foreign status.
  • ITIN stands for Individual Taxpayer Identification Number.

We are in no way affiliated with any government agency, including the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), U.S. Department of Treasury, or Social Security Administration (SSA). No, you do NOT have to send us your original passport to get your ITIN. And we indeed wish you much success in your
business or practice. One of our representatives will reach out to you directly to help answer your question.

How To Get An ITIN Number For Non-Residents & Expats

And on
behalf of the Internal Revenue Service and our presenters, Rich Furlong, Joe McCarthy, we would
like to thank you for attending today’s webinar. It is really important for the Internal Revenue
Service to stay connected with the tax professional community with industry associations, with
federal, state and local governments organizations as well as individual tax payers. You indeed
make our job a lot easier by sharing the information that allows for proper tax reporting.

  • However, applying for an ITIN isn’t like filing your taxes.
  • ITIN.com has taken strong measures to protect the security of your personal information and to ensure that your choices for its intended use are honored.
  • If you do not have a valid passport, we will provide you a List of Alternate ID’s you can instead.
  • ITIN.com occasionally allows other companies to offer our registered users’ information about their products and services, using postal mail only.
  • The CAA’s job is to be your agent to help you through the ITIN application process, from beginning to end.
  • An exclusive list of documents that are acceptable for this purpose is included in the Instructions for Form W-7.

Once I receive your application, I will email or call you to request your valid supporting and identification documents and any other requested attachments. An ITIN is valid so long as the taxpayer continues to use the ITIN number to file their taxes every year and to comply with tax reporting requirements. ITIN serves as your Tax identification number for filing your taxes, receiving a tax return from the IRS and to allow you to claim dependents you support in the U.S., Mexico or Canada. If an applicant cannot provide a tax return, then if they qualify for one of the five ITIN Exception Categories, they can use the supporting documentation from the category they qualify for instead of a tax return. The processing time from the moment you mail your application to the IRS to the time you receive an initial response is approximately 8 weeks. Processing times are shorter now than they have been historically since before the Covid-19 pandemic.

Can I Only Apply For an ITIN With a Tax Return?

You can apply for an ITIN any time during the year when you have a filing or reporting requirement. At a minimum, you should complete Form W-7 when you are ready to file your federal income tax return by the return’s prescribed due date. If the tax return you attach to Form W-7 is filed after the return’s due date, you may owe interest and/or penalties. It enables them to file taxes, which can be helpful in establishing a credit history, qualifying for loans, and other financial activities. Additionally, an ITIN can also be used to open a bank account and access financial services that require identification, such as mortgages or credit cards.

What ITIN numbers expire in 2019 or need to be renewed in 2022?

Once you receive your ITIN, the IRS requires you to revalidate it every five years. If you don’t use your ITIN for three consecutive years, it will expire. IRS.gov has a wealth of useful information about the process for non-residents. They also have special resources for international students, military members, and others.

You can ONLY find your ITIN number on your official IRS ITIN Card/Letter that was issued to you from the IRS when you initially applied for an ITIN. To obtain an SSN, see Form SS-5, Application for a Social Security Card. To get Form SS-5 or to find out if you are eligible to obtain an SSN, go to Social Security Administration or contact an SSA office. By law, an alien individual cannot have both an ITIN and an SSN. We respectfully and kindly REQUIRE all clients to be patient during this process.

How do I get an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)?

If you haven’t already created a Registration ID, we will ask you to do so. In addition, your transactions are guaranteed under the Fair Credit Billing Act. This Act states that your bank cannot hold you liable finding opportunity in flexible budget variance for more than $50.00 in fraudulent credit card charges. In the event of unauthorized use of your credit card, you must notify your credit card provider in accordance with its reporting rules and procedures.

Be sure that the advocate (or the taxpayer) holds onto the certified mail receipt. If a W-7 is rejected, the taxpayer should carefully read to understand why the ITIN application was rejected. The taxpayer should then inquire about how to get an ITIN number and make sure the documents are correct, send IRS any information they requested, and provide it in the form requested. If a taxpayer is trying to file their taxes, they must include their tax return with their ITIN application when applying for an ITIN number. However, if they qualify for one of the five ITIN “exception” categories, then they do not have to include a tax return with their application. No, a tax return is not required for an ITIN renewal application.

Can I get the Child Tax Credit with an ITIN?

A Social Security number is only issued for citizens and qualifying resident aliens, such as green card holders. This number keeps track of the years you’ve worked in the U.S. and your lifetime earnings. When you file your tax return or need to talk to the IRS, you’ll likely have to provide a tax identification number, which is also called a TIN or tax ID number.
